Jim is a Delta, Colorado native and the son of A. Allen Brown, who practiced law in Delta from the 1930’s until his death in 1983. Jim received his B. A. in Economics and Law degree at the University of Colorado.  Jim joined the firm in 1974 along side his father and brother.

He is licensed to practice law in Colorado. In 1985, he was counsel for Plaintiff-Appellant in Wright v. Horse Creek Ranches. 697 P. 2d 384 (road right-of-way case). And in 1993, he was counsel for Applicant in In re the matter of Gibbs. 856 P. 2d 798 (water rights matter).  Jim is the attorney for the Town of Crawford (1978- present).  His main areas of legal practice are real estate, estate planning, estate administration, water rights, civil trials and appeals, municipal law, and small business formation.  

Jim was editor-in-chief of the University of Colorado Law Review from 1972-1973.  He clerked for Judge Charles Pierce of the Colorado Court of Appeals from 1973-1974. Jim has been the Town Attorney for the Town of Cedaredge, CO (1978-1996), the Town of Orchard City, Co (1978-1983), and the Attorney for Delta County Memorial Hospital District (May 2002- November 2008).  He is a member of The Delta Rotary Club (president 1986-1987), on the board of Directors of Delta-Montrose Free Legal Services, and Young Life.  He has been a member of Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee, Colorado Supreme Court and The City of Delta Planning Commission.  He has been a member and on the Board of Midwestern Colorado Health Center, and the Delta-Montrose Community Concert Association.

Jim enjoys the outdoors including cross-country skiing, hiking, fly fishing, and bluegrass music.

Raised in Texas, Terry obtained a B.A. from the University of Texas in 1995, where he majored in History and Political Science and worked for the Texas Legislative Council. He earned his law degree from the University of Utah in 1998. After graduating from the University of Utah, Terry practiced as a trial attorney in Houston, Texas. In 2003 he moved to a large firm in Denver, Colorado. There he litigated high profile construction and business cases for fortune 500 clients. Terry is licensed to practice law in Colorado and Texas. The majority of his practice is focused on litigation involving construction, business, insurance, and employment. Terry has been published in many law journals and frequently teaches seminars to Engineers on topics specific to engineering. He is currently the president of the Delta Bar Association, member of the Colorado Bar Association (CBA), and serves as a Boy Scout leader.
In 2003, Terry and his wife, Sheryl, and their 5 children moved to Colorado. Seeking the beauty of the Western Slope and a smaller setting in which to raise their children, they settled in Delta County in 2010. Terry enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, hunting, fly-fishing, cross country skiing and watching his children’s sports.

Amanda McCauley

Amanda McCauley is a born and raised local of the Delta, Olathe, and Montrose area. She earned her high school diploma from Olathe High School in 2005. Amanda then went on to graduate from Western State College of Colorado in 2009 earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science with a Pre-Law Emphasis and English Minor. Amanda also attended Arapahoe Community College where she received her Certificate of Paralegal Studies in 2011.

Amanda enjoys spending time with friends and family in her spare time. She is an outdoorswoman who enjoys hunting and fishing. Amanda is also an avid photographer who specializes in animals and landscapes. She has recently taken up subsistence gardening as a new hobby.

Curt Smelser

Curt was born in Missouri and raised in the timber and lumber center of the Pacific Northwest where he learned the values and work ethic of its people. He holds bachelor and master degrees in geography, with minors in geology, from Western Washington University. He graduated law school from Lewis and Clark College, Northwestern School of Law in Portland, Oregon.

Curt has spent his entire professional life as a leader in public and private land use, natural resource, water and environmental decision-making as a planning director in Oregon and Washington, and as a private attorney. His expertise, as well as the focus of his law practice, is the entitlement process for land, water, natural resource, forestry and environmental permits. Working these issues through the local, state and federal governmental process is his specialty.

Curt’s work experience range from simple zoning and subdivision matters to entitlements for complete new urban areas, master plans for large residential developments, natural resource permits and commercial shopping and industrial centers to litigation of complex water rights issues. Curt was the lead attorney on several important Court of Appeals and Supreme Court decisions establishing new land use law in Washington. Curt and his wife Gayle built a home in Cedaredge in 2005 and moved permanently to Colorado in 2010. He has practiced law in Colorado since 2009. In his spare time, Curt enjoys daily walks with the family dogs, playing golf with his wife and two grandsons, reading and cooking. You may know Curt as the former owner of the Wildfire
